Eugene Crawford “Gene” Neill

Eugene Crawford “Gene” Neill of North Carrollton, 72, died on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018. at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Evergreen Cemetery in North Carrollton, Mississippi, with Pastor Ed Saunders of Carrollton/North Carrollton United Methodist Churches officiating. Lee Funeral Home in Winona handled arrangements.

Before his health declined, Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, and vegetable gardening. He was an avid sports fan and especially liked watching the Atlanta Braves on television. Most of all, though, Gene loved his friends and family. His home was often the gathering place for afternoon “bull sessions” with his buddies over coffee. Also, Gene had a keen sense of humor, and his friends and family members were
often targets of his good-natured practical jokes.

In fact, Gene’s life is a testimony to the value of friends and family. The help he gave to his friends, neighbors, and family members when he was healthy was reciprocated during his last years when they visited him, sat with him, and cared for him day and night. His primary caretakers were his sister, Hilda Neill Wright, and her husband, Mark Wright, who moved from their home in Bartlett, Tennessee, to attend to Gene when his illness worsened.

Hilda and Mark are grateful for the assistance of those who aided them in seeing to Gene’s needs during the final year of his life: Beauty Blackman, Jerry Branch, Marilyn Hale, Naomi Meeks, and Jim Pope, as well as the Sta-Home Hospice nurses and assistants.

Gene was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Crawford Neill (Hilda and Crawford). He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Neill Dixon (Richard), his grandson, Jack Dixon, and his sister, Hilda Neill Wright (Mark).

Honorary pallbearers were Bill Bole, Hardin Browning, Milton Martin, Mike Neal, Jack Sanders, Ben Shaw, and Jerry Stanford.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gene’s memory to North Carrollton United Methodist Church, PO Box 21,
North Carrollton, MS 38947, and to Evergreen Cemetery, PO Box 425, North Carrollton, MS 38947.
