Winona City Hall will be closed tomorrow for Good Friday.
The Winona Board of Aldermen voted to switch the state holiday for Confederate Memorial Day for Good Friday as requested by city employees.
In other city business, Park Director Mike Narmour presented engineer schematics for the installation of artificial turf on the infields of four baseball fields at the Winona Recreational Park. Engineer Alan Scott determined the square footage intially figured by the turf companies was accurate.
At the April 2 meeting, Narmour presented the board with quotes from two different companies for upwards of $600,000 for the four fields.
According to Narmour, baseball tournaments are much more difficult to recruit for due to the Winona Recreational Park having dirt and grass versus artificial turf. If there is rain, the artificial turf allows teams to play almost immediately, while dirt and grass may take days to dry for play.
“We’ve got a tournament this weekend, and [Tuesday] four or five teams pulled out because of the forecast,” Narmour said. “They are going to Vicksburg where they have turf.”
The Winona Recreational Park draws thousands to the area every year for baseball and softball tournaments. Not only is it good revenue to maintain the park, but the visitors stay, eat, and shop in Winona.
