Plans to build a clock tower at the intersection of Summit and Front streets in downtown Winona has taken another step toward reality. The project received a Small Municipality Grant in the amount of $150,000 from the Mississippi Development Authority this week.
According to a design by architect Belinda Stewart that was presented to the Winona Board of Aldermen by Frank Weed, chairman of the Clock Committee, the tower will arch over Front Street in front of the Depot. The clock, which used to grace the clock tower of the old Montgomery County Courthouse, will sit atop the arch, and vehicles will have enough clearance to travel underneath the tower.
The approximate cost to construct the tower is $500,000.
Senator Lydia Chassaniol (R-Winona), who has been working with the Clock Committee, helped acquire $250,000 from the Mississippi Legislature to go toward the project as part of 2019’s appropriation bill.
The Clock Committee, along with the City of Winona, North Central Planning and Development, and Chassaniol worked together to apply for the Small Municipality Grant.
