Dr. Howard Savage, Jr., Superintendent of Education for Winona-Montgomery Consolidated School District, recently announced renovations to Winona Secondary School and Tiger Stadium, as well as the construction of a new athletic complex at a cost of nearly $10.9 million.
Thanks to the leadership of State Representative Karl Oliver (R-Winona), the Winona-Montgomery Consolidated School District was awarded $7 million in legislative appropriations. These funds will be used to:
- Reroof the gymnasium, north and south wings of WSS, the Winona Career and Technical Center (including repair and paint of plywood mansard), the lower band hall, and the Wolfe Lab building.
- Renovate all restrooms with new floor and wall tiles, plumbing fixtures, ceilings, and lights.
- Renovate dressing rooms in gymnasium, replace plumbing fixtures, and paint.
- Replace flooring in corridors and classrooms.
- Install new wood flooring in the gymnasium with basketball and volleyball court lines and volleyball floor sockets.
- Install new HVAC to heat and cool corridors, install new HVAC in gymnasium and Winona Career and Technical Center shop.
- Replace HVAC in band hall, auditorium, and small Winona Career and Technical Center shops.
- Replace the two-story lift, and add lift in the gymnasium for handicap accessibility.
- Repair plaster walls as needed.
- Install new drop ceiling and lighting in corridors and paint.
- Replace exterior doors at Winona Secondary School.
- Refresh historic corridor doors with wood finish and new hardware.
- Renovate gymnasium interior east rooms and entryway.
- Make minor repairs at Wolfe Lab building.
- Make major electrical service upgrades at Winona Secondary School.
- Install new fire alarm system.
Construction of a new athletic complex, located at the corner of Applegate and Raper streets is also planned. The two-phase project will cost approximately $3 million in total.
The athletic complex will include an indoor practice facility, coaching offices, locker rooms, a weight room, and storage.
Plans are also in the works to artificially turf the field at Tiger Stadium at a cost of $855,000. This will allow football teams, soccer teams, and the Winona Pride Marching Band to practice on the field as needed.
The board will complete a final vote on the turf field and athletic facility, phase one and phase two, at the March 19 Board Meeting. Upon board approval, the bidding process will commence this spring and work will begin shortly thereafter.
“Renovations at Winona Secondary School and Tiger Stadium, in addition to the construction of a new athletic complex, illustrate the Winona-Montgomery Consolidated School District’s Board of Trustee’s commitment to building a culture of success in academics, athletics, and career readiness,” said Savage. “The board is serious about our district being one of the best school districts in the state.”
