The Winona High School girls and boys soccer teams made it past the first round of the MHSAA Class 1 playoffs with wins last Friday night at Tiger Stadium.
The Lady Tigers cruised to a 9-0 win over Coahoma County to improve to 10-1 overall. Winona took on Mooreville High School Tuesday night at home in a second-round contest.
“Mooreville will be the best team we have played all year,” WHS girls coach Mikel Sykes said earlier this week. “We have 11 juniors and a few first-time players starting, so this will be a good measuring stick going into next year.
“I think we are getting close to being on that next level of competition with the Strayhorns, Boonevilles, and Moorevilles in the North. We will see how close we are Tuesday.”
Anna Beth Walton led the offense for the Lady Tigers with five goals. Lilly Chandler scored twice, and Kendall Stanley and Mary Beth Brannon had one goal each. Brannon also had two assists, and Chandler and Sofia Guzman had one assist apiece.
Mooreville won its first-round game 7-0 over Yazoo County last week.
The winner advances to play Saturday against the winner of the Booneville-Strayhorn contest from Tuesday in the third round.
The Tigers claimed a 5-1 win over visiting Independence High School at Tiger Stadium to move to 4-6-1 overall.
The Tigers also played Mooreville Tuesday but had to travel to face the Troopers, who beat Yazoo County 6-1 last Saturday in their first-round game.
Miles Bailey notched three goals for the Tigers against Independence, and Aubrey Bailey and Thomas Rosamond had a goal each.
The winner of Tuesday’s game advances to take on St. Andrew’s or Strayhorn Saturday in the third round.
