Three members of the Winona High School tennis team made it to the semifinals of their respective divisions at the State 3A individual tournament April 26-27 in Oxford.
Murry Catherine Alderman, who plays in girls singles, won her first two matches and fell in the semis to Ally Everett of Wesson High School by a score of 1-6, 4-6.
Alderman opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Terrial Owens of McLaurin High School. In her second-round match, she beat Chloe Santiago of St. Patrick High School 1-6, 6-4, 10-8.
In mixed doubles action, the duo of Molly Tompkins and Khristian Williams also made it to the semis, falling 0-6, 0-6 to Jaqueline Mossy and Omar Tayara of St. Stanislaus.
They opened the mixed doubles action with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Mylee Sullivan and Brady Williams of Nettleton High School. Tompkins and Williams defeated Ethan Hammons and Haylee Westbrook of Raleigh High School 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 10-8 in the second round.
In boys’ singles, Kirven McCrory lost in the quarters to Cole Bryant of St. Stanislaus 2-6, 2-6. McCrory beat Brody Hammons of Raleigh 6-3, 6-2 in the first round.
In boys’ doubles action, Gunner Wilkes and Lucas Harper dropped a 0-6, 0-6 match to Rowan Guerrero and Robert Herbert of St. Stanislaus. Brian Leech and Jemarius Sanders of Winona lost 4-6, 2-6 to Bo Gavin and Seth Jackson of Enterprise.
In girls’ doubles, Lana Branch and Janey McRae fell 2-6, 0-6 to Emma Stokic and Madison Williams of St. Andrew’s. Rhianna Drake and
Radleigh Woods dropped a 2-6, 3-6 match to Alana
Whittemore and Shiloh Grisham of Alcorn Central.
