The Winona High School girls volleyball team went 2-1 in three matches played last week to improve to 13-8 overall and finish Region 3-3A play with a 6-0 record and the top seed from the region for the state playoffs, which start Saturday.
The Lady Tigers won a thrilling five-set match against Water Valley on Sept. 23, winning 3-2. They lost the first two sets by identical scores of 25-20. However, Winona rallied to win the next three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 15-4.
The Lady Tigers hosted Grenada High School Sept. 24, falling 3-1 to the Lady Chargers. Grenada won the first two sets 25-23 and 25-17, but Winona won the third set 25-19. The Lady Chargers closed things out with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.
Winona played at Region 3 foe Amanda Elzy last Thursday, taking a 3-0 win. They claimed the sets 25-8, 25-10 and 25-10.
Winona will play Rosa Fort, the Region 2 No. 4 seed, Saturday in the first round of the playoffs.

The Lady Jaguars captured their first win of the season last week with a 3-0 victory over Holmes County Central on Sept. 24.
J.Z. George (1-11 overall) won the sets 25-7, 25-18 and 26-24. The junior varsity team won its match 2-0, winning the sets 25-20 and 25-10.
The Lady Jaguars played a Region 4-2A doubleheader at Sebastopol High School on Sept. 23. They lost the first match 3-0 as Sebastopol won the sets 25-3, 25-7 and 25-5. In the second match, the Lady Bobcats won the match 3-0, taking the sets 25-20, 25-9 and 25-12.
J.Z. George closed out its season by hosting Ruleville Monday and Winona on Tuesday.
