The Winona High School girls fastpitch softball team closed out last week with a
17-5 win over Leake Central last Thursday night in Carthage.
The Lady Tigers (3-4 overall) were led at the plate by Makinley Russell and Lindsey Berryhill, who had a single and double and three RBIs each. Olivia Swindle had two singles, and Dorothy Martin Derrick and Alisha Taylor had a hit apiece.
Swindle got the win in the circle as she only gave up two hits and struck out seven.
The Lady Tigers dropped a 15-1 decision at Calhoun City last Tuesday. Winona failed to get a hit in the game.
Winona, which played at Eupora Monday, goes to Calhoun City Thursday. The Winona High Tournament is slated to be played Saturday. At 10 a.m., Winona takes on Leake Central, and Leake Central play Noxapater at 11:45 a.m. At 1:15 p.m., Noxapater battles Riverside, and at 2:45 p.m., Winona plays Riverside.
Winona High Baseball
The Tigers were only able to play one game last week as they dropped a 7-4 contest to visiting French Camp Academy last Tuesday.
French Camp scored five runs in the first and two in the second. Winona (7-2 overall) scored one run each in the third and fourth innings and two in the fifth.
Tommarion Brown had a single and double and drove in one run for WHS, and Chase Richardson had two singles. Denarius Robinson had a single and scored once, and Chance Richardson had an RBI single. Hammond Austin had a single, and Conner Helms and Gavin Vance scored a run each.
Vance (2-2) took the loss as he went two innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits, walking two and fanning two. Robinson worked five innings, walking five and striking out nine.
Winona, which had games against Louisville High and French Camp canceled last week, played at Carroll Academy Monday and at Amanda Elzy Tuesday. The Tigers entertain Ruleville Friday and visit Columbus Saturday.
During Spring Break week, Winona will play Freeport High School and Baker High School in Florida on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
Winona High Tennis
The Tigers dropped a match last Thursday to Eupora High School by a 7-0 score.
Thomas Rosamond lost in boys singles 6-1. 6-0, and Lillian Jones lost 6-0, 6-0 in girls singles. In No. 1 boys doubles, Jemarius Sanders and Gunner Wilkes lost 6-1, 6-4, and Jeffrey Butts and A’jerrian Garrett lost 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 boys doubles.
In No. 1 girls doubles, Ariella Jones and Amarria Tidwell lost 6-0, 6-0. In No. 2 girls doubles, Tara Loggins and Kim Williams lost 6-0, 6-0. In mixed doubles, Ben Rosamond and Marlee Wilkes lost 6-0, 6-0.
Winona High Archery
The Winona archery team competed in a shoot last Thursday at J.Z. George. They finished third with a team score of 2,649 points. Pillow Academy was first with 2,939 points, and the host school was second with 2,775 points.
The top six girls and their scores were Brycelyn Townsend (249), Lilly Chandler (248), Alicia Jackson (224), Autumn Powell (197), Nikhyla Baskins (192) and Khamiya Russell (103).
The top six boys and their scores were Wheeler Chandler (247), Bryce Kilcrease (244), Dylan Johnson (226), Ethan Drake (224), Jamar Nash (216) and Jabari Elevry (193).
Other boys who competed and their scores were John Sykes (189), Ivan Jamerson (176) and Archie Flowers (172).
