The Winona High School and J.Z. George football teams are a week away from opening their 2022 season, but both will see live action Friday in preseason jamborees.
Winona High
The Tigers will travel to Oxford to play Senatobia at 4 p.m. to kick off the Oxford Jamboree.
“We are looking for game reps for our kids, and we know Senatobia is going to offer us a good challenge,” said WHS head coach Joey Tompkins. “Of the 22 kids we will have on the field, we know the first 18 or 19. We’re just trying to solidify the other three or four.
“We need to play this game before our opener. Our quarterback [Chase Richardson] has not played that position in a few years, so it will be good for him to get in the reps.”
The Tigers are coming off an 11-2 campaign in 2021. They dropped a 52-20 decision to North Panola in the third round of the North 3A playoffs. Winona won Region 3-3A with a 4-0 mark.
Winona opens its regular season Aug. 26 at Choctaw County High School.
J.Z. George
The Jaguars will play their preseason game in North Carrollton at Farris Jenkins Field as they take on West Tallahatchie.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday.
“I want to see who will give effort, who is not afraid to hit and who can make plays,” said J.Z. George head coach Rusty Smith. “I expect some mistakes to be made being that it is early in the season, but I want to see us get after it.”
The Jaguars were 7-5 overall last season, finishing second in Region 4-2A with a 3-1 record. They beat Belmont 44-22 in the first round of the playoffs but dropped a 56-12 decision to Charleston in the second round.
J.Z. George opens its season Aug. 26 at Alcorn Central.
