The Winona High School girls basketball team held off a furious rally by Ruleville Central to claim a 51-50 Region 3-3A win last Friday night in Winona.
The homestanding Lady Tigers led 13-2 after the first frame, 21-14 at the half and 43-23 after the third period. However, Ruleville turned up the heat on both ends of the floor to outscore Winona 27-8 in the final eight minutes.
Markeshia Burnett led Winona (6-12 overall, 1-3 in region) with 17 points. Arielle Jones had 13 points, and Tamari Ford tacked on seven points.
In the boys game, Ruleville raced out in front 17-9 after the first and cruised to a 61-24 win. Ruleville led 35-13 at the half and 52-15 after the third period.
Jaidan Greenleaf and Chance Richardson had six points each, and Yoshawn Hudson tacked on four points for the Tigers (3-16, 0-6).
Winona played host to Region 3 foe Humphreys County on Jan. 22. The Lady Tigers dropped a 59-55 decision to the Cowgirls, who led 12-10 after one, 25-21 at the half and 35-34 after the third period.
Jones had 24 points, and Lawanda Loggins eight for Winona. Ford finished with seven, and Burnett had six points.
In the boys game, Humphreys County won 57-47 as it led 17-13 after one, 32-26 at the half and 46-43 after the third period. Greenleaf had 19 points, and Richardson nine points.
Winona, which played at Amanda Elzy Tuesday, goes to Ruleville Friday in the regular season finale. The Region 3 Tournament is next week at Yazoo County High School.
