The Winona Christian boys picked up two big wins this past week.
The Stars opened the week with a big 45-41 win over Canton and then took a 45-35 win over Winston Academy in district play.
The Lady Stars split a pair of games, beating Canton 28-25 before falling 57-20 to Winston.
Winona Christian has one game scheduled this week as they will play Regents School of Oxford on Thursday. Both teams will be off until after Christmas and New Years and return to action on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024 at home against Central Holmes.
Winona Christian Boys 45, Winston 35
The Stars took a first-half lead and 10-point win over the Patriots on Friday.
Winona held a slim 12-10 lead in the first period and then outscored Winston 17-10 in the second to lead 29-20 at the half. Winston came back and outscored Winona 10-7 in the third to cut the score to 36-30 going to the fourth. But WCS held on and outscored Winston 9-5 in the fourth for the final margin.
“It was a big win for us to get our district record to 2-1 before the break,” WCS coach Joey Johnson said. We were sluggish at times on offense but we played extremely well on defense.”
Reese Johnson led Winston with 20 points while Reese Cooper had 13 points and Jack Sorgen added 10 points.
Winston Girls 57, Winona Christian 20
The Lady Patriots dominated from the opening top and cruised to a 37-point win over the Lady Stars.
Winston jumped out to a 19-4 lead over Winona and then outscored the Lady Stars 22-5 in the second to lead 41-9 at the half. Winston continue to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Winona 10-6 in the third and 6-5 in the fourth.
Lucy Oliver led WCS with six points while Allie Leach had four points. Lennie Kate Wood and Sara Beth Rawles had three points apiece while Malaina Kuhn and Avery Harville each had two points.
Winona Christian Boys 45, Canton 41
The Stars built an early lead and held on to take a four-point win over the Panthers last week.
Winona led 15-11 at the end of the first and then outscored Canton 10-7 in the second to lead 25-18 at the half. Winona extended that lead in the third period and outscored Winona 11-8 to make the score 36-26 going to the fourth. Canton rallied and outscored Winona 15-9 in the fourth but it wasn’t enough as the Stars held on for the win.
“It’s the best game of the year on both ends of the floor,” WCS coach Joey Johnson said. “We never trailed and led by 12 late in the third quarter. I was proud of how they responded after losing a tough game on the road last week.”
Reese Johnson led Winona Christian with 14 points while Reese Cooper had 12 points. Brannon Hill had seven points while Jack Sorgen and Will Irwin had six points apiece.
Winona Christian Girls 28, Canton 25
The Lady Stars came back from an early deficit and took a three-point win over the Lady Panthers on Tuesday.
Canton jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first period and outscored Winona 9-2 in the second to lead 16-4 at the half. Winona then fought back and outscored Canton 13-4 to cut the margin to 20-17 going to the fourth. Winona completed the comeback by outscoring Canton 11-5 in the fourth to take the win.
Lucy Oliver led Winona Christian with 11 points, while Sara Beth Rawles and Allie Leach each had six points apiece.
