Last week, Veteran’s Day programs were held across this country in honor of our veterans. I attended the Veteran’s Day program at the Carroll County courthouse in Carrollton as I have for many years.
Veterans have fought for us and given us the freedoms that we have today. No matter how big or small the role of each Veteran was, they have made history by making an impact with serving.
Veteran’s Day grew out of our commemoration of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. This area has always been strong supporters of our military and Veteran’s through the years. There have been many programs at schools and courthouses in honor of our veterans over the years.
Here in 2025 on Veteran’s Day, I thought back to 2017 when the Town of North Carrollton did a proclamation to honor veterans in recognition of their service that was presented at a Veteran’s program at the Carrollton courthouse. On that November day at the courthouse in Carrollton, some of those in attendance from the organization then known as Carroll County Veterans Helping Veterans, local veterans Ben Shute, Paul Henderson, and Johnny Marlow (who have now passed away) along with many others from that organization, are remembered for their service to veterans which made a difference in so many lives and will be beneficial for many years to come.
I remember when my Dad, Hubert Strachan, had to be admitted in the Veterans Home in Koscisuko. The Carroll County Veterans Helping Veterans was very instrumental in helping him get admitted. These acts of kindness for fellow veterans are so important and remembered for a lifetime.
Veterans come from all walks of life; they carry the same virtues within them. They possess courage, patriotism, determination, selflessness, dedication to duty, and integrity. At every moment in our history, they have made our country stronger.
As the son of a veteran, I realize there are so many of those who have served our country that deserve respect and compassion. As we recognized on Nov. 11, 2025, Veteran’s Day is in our hearts to continue the remembrance and appreciation of those who served.
Ken Strachan serves as the mayor of North Carrollton, is a member of the Mississippi Municipal League board of directors, and serves as North Central Mayor’s Association president .
