July 20, 1969 - The moon landing. We continue to talk about this historic event and Neil Armstrong's unforgettable words:
“One small step for man
One giant leap for mankind.”
August 17, 1969, a day Mississippians and the Gulf Coast region will long remember. We were living in Lexington in a mobile home. The day was quiet to begin with, but hardly finished that way for the Gulf Coast. My husband was in Jackson. The phone call and swift words were to the point. "Grab up some things and you and Rhonda go to the Mississippi Power and Light Building for added safety. The storm is coming ashore!" We did as he said! This fear in his voice was something I could feel in my bones, and even to this day, it's there. In only a matter of hours, it destroyed hundreds of years of man-made structures, and many lives were lost.
Our strength as a nation rallied in both instances. People came together to rebuild our beloved Mississippi Gulf Coast. The nation viewed on live television an event that was unbelievable- a moon walk! The pride we felt could not be measured.
Technology and lifestyles have come a long way, and for the most part, I am thankful for it. We hear that much is different now and many long for the good old days. Time changes and so it goes. We change and our mishaps at home begin to be serious at times, my arm catches on 'something’! I pass the mirror and see an image of mother and remember her laughing when similar things happened to her. I've learned that laughter is good medicine.
Thank you, God, for the seasons, and may we be joyful in all of our days.
