On Friday, August 16, Arlin Ray Roberson of Greenville was arrested following an incident in which he fled police during a traffic stop. According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Deputies attempted to pull over a vehicle in the Avalon area of Highway 7 and a chase ensued after the driver refused to yield to law enforcement. With the assistance of Leflore County Sheriff’s Department and Greenwood Police Department, CCSO Deputies were able to stop the suspect, later identified as Roberson, utilizing spike strips. Roberson was promptly apprehended and transported to the Carroll County Regional Correctional Facility where he was booked on the charges of Felony Fleeing and Felony Possession of Methamphetamines. His bond was set at a total of $40,000 by Judge Ronnie Hicks and remains in jail at this time.
In an unrelated incident, on Monday, August 19 Demetrius Harbin of Holcomb was arrested following a high-speed chase. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office reported that the chase ensued after Deputies attempted to stop a stolen vehicle which was traveling north on I-55 near Vaiden. The driver, refusing to yield, fled north at speeds exceeding a hundred miles per hour. Carroll Deputies requested assistance from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, the Winona Police Department, the Grenada County Sheriff’s Department, and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. Upon the deployment of spike strips, the driver crossed the median and continued northbound in the southbound lane of I-55 at excessive speeds. Pit maneuvers were eventually utilized to stop the fleeing vehicle and end the chase. The driver, then identified as Harbin, was taken into custody and booked into the Carroll County Regional Correctional Facility on the charges of Felony Fleeing, Possession of Stolen Property, and Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer (for intentionally ramming Law Enforcement vehicles). The vehicle used during the chase was reported stolen out of Byram, but is also related to another vehicle theft reported in the Holcomb area. Harbin remains in jail at this time awaiting initial appearance on the aforementioned charges.
Sheriff Clint Walker commented on the incidents, stating, “I thank the Lord that no one was injured due to the reckless and dangerous actions of both of these suspects. Having a good working relationship with neighboring law enforcement agencies makes all the difference at times like these. I thank all the agencies who worked with us to get these dangerous drivers off the streets.”
