On Saturday, June 22, at approximately 9:30 p.m. Winona Police Department Officers were dispatched to the scene of a non-fatal shooting on Alice Lane after a call was made to Montgomery County EOC.
Witnesses at the scene reported that two Winona natives, Willie Kirkwood and Bernard Nash, had gotten into a physical altercation, during which Kirkwood struck Nash with a hammer and the two fell to the ground. According to witnesses, a sixteen-year-old juvenile male attempted to diffuse the situation. At this time, Nash fired an uncertain number of shots from a 9mm in his possession. The unnamed teen was hit twice by the shots. The victim was swiftly transported to Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital for medical attention before being transferred to Blair E. Batson Hospital where his condition remained stable.
Officers were quickly able to determine that both Kirkwood and Nash appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time the fight and shooting took place. Nash was transported to Tyler Holmes by the Winona Police Department for treatment of his wound received in the fight. After he was cleared for transport, he was taken to the Grenada County Jail and booked on charges of reckless discharge of a firearm that resulted in a juvenile’s injuries. Kirkwood was arrested and charged with aggravated assault for attacking Nash with a hammer. He was transported to the Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility in Vaiden where he remains in custody. Winona Officers recovered the 9mm firearm from Nash’s possession at the scene and are not expecting any further arrests to take place. The bond hearings for Kirkwood and Nash were earlier this week.
