You may see big vinyl signs!
And lots of children lined up to go into the church with the American flag, the Christian flag, and a big Bible.
It’s summer, and its time for Vacation Bible School.
As a child VBS was an exciting time for me to be with friends, learn Bible stories, do crafts, and, of course, have kool-aid and cookies!
We played games outside and ran and sweated. We came inside and got a drink of cold water, and we gathered to learn about God, Jesus, salvation, the Bible, and how to live a Christian life from long suffering and energetic adults.
We learned so much!
Then it was my turn as a teenager to teach in VBS, lead games, and do crafts. It was great! We even did mission VBS.
And when an adult and a mama, we sent our boys to VBS where I helped with teaching, or crafts, or refreshments. They loved it!
I was blessed to be a part of leading VBS at parchman with the children of the workers there, and at the Choctaw reservation with the children there.
If you have never helped in VBS, or if you have never been to VBS, or if your children or grandchildren haven’t had this opportunity—-I encourage you to find a VBS in your area and let the children go.
Why?
Summer is a chance for more than just having time off, or going on vacation, or playing sports.
It’s a time for children to have an opportunity for spiritual growth, to learn about the essentials of life, and prepare for eternity.
It’s more than decorations, games, and fun.
It’s a time to learn about the creator, salvation, and how to live with others.
It takes a lot of planning, preparing, and praying to get ready for VBS. Someone has to be in charge of the overall program. Teachers for different age groups and helpers volunteer to serve. A kitchen and refreshment group assembles to plan, serve, and clean up refreshments for all. There’s a group to teach crafts and helpers. Materials have to be gathered to use in those crafts. The activity group and helpers plan the games and outside A Bible story leader teaches the Bible stories each day. Song leaders and worship leaders work with the whole group.
Decorations are planned and go up!
That’s a lot of work, you may say.
Why?
“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’ Matthew 19:14
We have to teach them where to find Jesus!
