The Winona High School baseball team capped off its week with a 5-1 win over visiting Yazoo County in a Region 3-3A contest Friday in Winona.
The Tigers (11-7 overall, 3-1 in region) were outhit 5-4 by the Panthers, who made five errors in the field, walked five and hit four batters.
Gavin Vance (3-2) worked seven strong innings, yielding the one run on five hits, walking two and fanning seven. He had a single at the plate.
Hammond Austin had a single and double, driving in one run and scoring once. Danarius Robinson had a single and scored once, and Tommarion Brown, Chase Richardson and Kam’ron Robinson scored a run apiece.
Winona scored three runs in the second and two in the fourth. Yazoo County tallied one run in the first inning.
The Tigers played host to Ruleville last Wednesday, claiming a 10-0 region win. They tallied two runs each in the first and second innings, five in the third and one in the fifth.
Winona only had four hits as Ruleville committed seven errors in the field. Danarius Robinson had a single and double, scoring one run and driving in one. Conner Helms had a single and RBI, and Kentrell Crawford had an RBI single. Jordan Richardson had two RBIs and scored two runs, and Austin Bailey, Kam’ron Robinson and Vance had an RBI and scored one run each.
Wyatt Boone (4-0) got the win on the mound as he went four innings, striking out six.
Winona started its week on the diamond with an 18-11 loss to region foe Humphreys County. The Cowboys scored three runs in the first, one in the second, four in the fourth and five runs each in the fifth and seventh innings. The Tigers plated one run apiece in the second and sixth innings, two in the third, three in the fifth and four in the seventh.
Helms (3-3) took the loss on the hill as he went 4 1/3 innings, giving up nine runs (five earned) on four hits, walking eight and striking out eight. Austin went two innings, allowing nine runs on two hits, walking five and fanning two. Chance Richardson got the last two outs in the seventh, walking three and fanning one.
Brown had a single and triple, scoring three runs and driving in a run. Austin had two singles, scored twice and drove in a run, and Kam’ron Robinson had a home run, scoring one run and driving in two. Chase Richardson had a double and two RBIs, and Bailey had a double, RBI and scored a run.
Helms had an RBI single and scored once, and Chance Richardson had a single and scored a run. Danarius Robinson and Jordan Richardson scored a run each.
Winona, which was slated to visit Ruleville Tuesday, hosts Amanda Elzy Friday and goes to Senatobia Saturday.
Winona Softball
The Lady Tigers played two games last week as they claimed an 18-3 win over visiting Leake Central last Wednesday and dropped a 16-0 decision to Region 3-3A foe Yazoo County last Thursday.
Against Leake, Winona scored nine runs in the first, five in the second and four in the third. They outhit Leake 4-1, taking advantage of 16 walks issued by Leake pitching.
Madison Henderson had two singles, and Olivia Swindle and Oakley Chumney had a single each. Swindle had an RBI and scored a run, and Chumney had three RBIs and scored two runs. Emily Casiday scored three runs and had two RBIs, and Hailey Burton had two RBIs and scored a run. Makinley Russell scored twice and had an RBI.
Winona (6-9 overall, 1-1 in region) played at Elzy Monday and entertains Humphreys County Thursday.
Winona Tennis
The Tigers’ tennis team went 1-1 in matches played last week.
Last Tuesday, Winona beat Amanda Elzy 4-3. In boys singles, Thomas Rosamond won his match 6-3, 6-0, and in girls singles, Summer Miller won her match by forfeit. In No. 1 boys doubles, Jemarius Sanders and Gunner Wilkes won their match 6-1, 6-0, and in mixed doubles, Jeffrey Butts and Lilian Jones won their match 6-3, 6-3.
Ariella Jones and Marlee Wilkes lost their No. 1 girls doubles match 4-6, 5-7. Mikhalah Coker and Kimorah Williams lost in No. 2 girls doubles, 3-6, 0-6. In No. 2 boys doubles, A’jerrian Garrett and Ben Rosamond dropped a 1-6, 3-6 decision.
Winona took on East Webster High School last Monday, falling 7-0. Thomas Rosamond lost in boys singles 0-6, 0-6, and Lily Chandler lost 0-6, 0-6 in girls singles. In No. 1 girls doubles, Ariella Jones and Wilkes lost their match 0-6, 0-6, and in No. 2 girls doubles, Coker and Amarria Tidwell lost 0-6, 0-6.
In No. 1 boys doubles, Sanders and Wilkes lost 1-6, 0-6, and in No. 2 boys doubles, Ben Rosamond and Garrett fell 0-6, 0-6. In mixed doubles, Butts and Lilian Jones won 0-6, 0-6.
Winona Archery
The Winona High archery team finished with a team score of 2,730 points at last week’s North 3A competition in Starkville.
The top six girls for the Tigers with their scores were Brycelyn Townsend (262), Lilly Chandler (258), Alicia Jackson (235), Ni’Khyla Baskin (220), Autumn Powell (204) and Jayden Holifield (177).
The top six boys with their scores were Jacob Kilcrease (247), William Chandler (245), Jamar Nash (241), Dylan Johnson (233), Archie Flowers (209) and Ethan Drake (199).
