The Winona High School boys basketball team closed out the week with a 59-23 triumph over Memphis School of Excellence at the Desoto Central Christmas Classic Saturday in Southaven.
The Tigers (4-11 overall) put the game away with impressive first and second quarters. They led 23-7 after the first and 39-14 at the half. They made it 49-20 after the third frame.
DJ Rias led a balanced scoring attack with nine points, and Fred Alexander chipped in eight points. Ariez Peeples and Darrion Crawford had seven points each, and Ayden Johnson had six points. Troylando Eden and Yoshawn Hudson tacked on five points apiece.
The Lady Tigers also played in the one-day tournament as they took on Lake Cormorant High School, falling 42-26. Lake Cormorant led 12-5 after one, 20-15 at the half and 35-18 after the third period.
Ariella Jones led Winona (5-10) with 13 points, and Madison Keys tacked on seven points. Mikhalah Coker had four points.
Winona played host to Eupora High School last Friday night as the Lady Tigers prevailed 57-38. Winona led 17-9 after the first period, 35-15 at the half and 52-24 after the third frame.
Jones led the way with 21 points, and Coker had 18 points. Keys finished with 11 points.
The Tigers dropped a 61-35 decision to the Eagles, who led 14-10 after one, 30-20 at the half and 48-32 after the third period. Johnson and Hudson had eight points each, and Crawford finished with seven.
Winona entertained Grenada High School last Tuesday night. The Lady Chargers won 68-21 as they led 24-8 after one, 40-15 at the half and 55-21 after the third. Jones had 10 points, and Coker tacked on five.
The Tigers fell 61-47 to the Chargers, who led 16-10 after one, 31-17 at the half and 51-27 after the third. Kentrell Crawford led the Tigers with 13 points, and Jalon Oliver had 10. Peeples tallied eight points, and Darrion Crawford had six. Hudson had four points.
Winona started its week with a visit to Greenwood to face Leflore County High School last Monday in games played at Greenwood High’s gym. In the girls game, Leflore won 41-35 as it led 19-6 after one, 28-18 at the half and 35-23 after the third frame.
Jones led Winona with 22 points, and Kimorah Williams had eight points.
In the boys game, Leflore County won 69-36 as it led 19-8 after one, 37-18 at the half and 52-30 after the third period. Kentrell Crawford had 12 points, and Alexander notched eight points. Jamarcus Robinson had six points.
