Carrollton Depot was built just north of town

The Georgia Pacific was formed in 1881 to build a railroad from Atlanta, Ga., to Greenville. The final link was completed in 1889. When the railroad was completed through Carrollton, it featured a depot which, at the time, was located in an open field just north of and across the creek from Carrollton.

The beginning of J. J. Gee & Sons mercantile

Situated on the northwest corner of the courthouse square in Carrollton is the J. J. Gee and Sons mercantile store. Before the store closed in the 1970’s, it boasted that it was one of the oldest stores in the state still operating under its original name.

Remembering May Ely: Vaiden’s widowed bride

In the Vaiden area once lived the Ely family. While the family was an older established family, little is known about them with the possible exception of Miss May Ely. Miss May Ely was a very bright, outgoing, and lovely young lady who easily made friends with all she met and just seem to brighten the world around her.

Kilmichael marshal shoots town barber

After the completion of the Georgia Pacific railroad from Columbus to Greenville in 1890, new towns began to spring up along the route. One of the new towns that was born of the railroad was Kilmichael.
