In the 1800’s, travel in Carrol and Montgomery counties was much more of a struggle and adventure than one can imagine today. In 1936, Alvin Oliver, a life-long resident of Montgomery County, related the following tale of a fifteen-mile trip to Winona in 1882.

Carroll County, a political powerhouse

Today it is doubtful that many politicians at the state or federal level consider Carroll County an important venue, but this was not always the case. During the late 1800’s, Carroll County was an incubator for politicians. Interestingly, most all of these persons received their early education in Carroll County.

The story of Duck Hill’s great railroad heist

On Saturday, December 15, 1888, just before dark, the Southern Express headed north towards Memphis pulled into Duck Hill depot to take on water. As it pulled away from the station, two slender, middle-aged men with common handkerchiefs covering their faces boarded the train.
