On a recent trip to our local library, I found a 1951 Wig-Wag year book. It was easy to identify some of those pictured, but not so easy with others. One thing is for certain -- if you have your school's yearbook, treasure it. Before each of our class reunions, I go back and refresh my memory of our classmates and read all the notes in the front and back. It's hard to hold back tears, and there are such funny remarks that I was laughing out loud. My, times sure have changed.
The dedication of this annual was to Mrs. Marion Lee Branch, teacher of English, Latin and speech, director of debate and sponsor of the senior class. It reads as follows:
Whose pleasing personality, patience, tolerance, understanding, and enthusiasm for all school activities have won her a distinct place in the hearts of all pupils, and whose character, scholarship, and teaching qualities have inspired them to high ideals, we, the staff of the Winona Wig Wag so affectionately dedicate this, the 1951 volume of the Wig Wag.
The superintendent was Robert H. Taylor, and the 1951 Winona Wig Wag was presented by Winona High School with Annice Heath as editor-in chief.
Business managers were Ed Hammond and Donald Peterson, and the sponsor was Mrs. Jimmy Weaver.
When I came to the cheerleaders page, this was printed:
On our city's western border
Reared against the sky
Proudly stands our Alma Mater
As the years roll by
"Forward ever" be our watch word
"Conquer and prevail,"
Hail to thee, our Alma Mater
Winona High, all hail!
Cheerleaders were Joy Alice Woods, Martha Ahlrich, Patty Ann Patterson, Jane Nix and Bobbie Nell Fowler.
It was good to take a trip back to the 50s in this annual, and there is more to comment on in my next article!
