The Winona baseball team dropped a season-opening 3-2 game to Ethel.
“From a defensive standpoint, I thought we played pretty well,” said Coach Mark Austin. “We didn't have an error. Every opportunity we had to make a play on the ball we did.”
Dre Bays singled twice and drove in both Tiger runs and Jon Reuben Chasteen pitched well, according to Austin.
Winona played French Camp Tuesday and will host a six-team tournament Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Tigers are scheduled to play Amanda Elzy at 6:30 Thursday, Choctaw County at 7 p.m. Friday, J.Z. George at 10:30 Saturday and Kirk Academy at 6:30 Saturday. Kosciusko will also participate in the tournament.
Fast pitch softball
The start of the Winona fast-pitch softball season was delayed by rain that washed out scheduled games with Ethel and French Camp. The Lady Tigers played Noxapater Tuesday and have road games Thursday at Starkville and Friday at Ethel.
“We're ready to get started,” said Coach Steven Helms. “We haven't been on the field much because of rain. I hope we can get back in a groove.”
