This weekend, the Winona Times and the Winona Rotary Club will host Pork and Politics at the north end of front street beginning at 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The political rally will give state and local candidates in Montgomery County a chance to introduce themselves and tell why they should receive residents of Montgomery County’s vote.
Matt Bennett with Modern Woodmen of America said the rally is first come, first serve and time slots will be available for candidates to sign up to speak. Candidates will have an allotted amount of time to speak to those in attendance.
Bennettt said vendors had been invited to serve barbecue, and iced cold water will be available for free. He said the rally is a way for the Winona Rotary Club to provide the public a forum to hear more about those running for local and statewide offices.
Candidate can also bring tents and tables and set up and talk to candidates during the rally.
In Black Hawk, the old fashioned Black Hawk rally will begin at 2 p.m. at the Black Hawk School at the intersection of Highway 17 and 430. Kay Alford, a member of the Black Hawk Homemakers Club said the political rally is a political tradition and a Mississippi Landmark.
She said in an earlier interview the rally is held every four years in June for candidates seeking local, regional and state offices. Alford said the rally dates back to the late sixties and it’s sponsored by the Black Hawk Homemakers Club.
Candidates running for state and local elections in Carroll County are invited to attend.
