After one of the most successful basketball seasons in school history, Winona Christian is looking for a new boys and girls basketball coach.
Nick Mumme announced that he was leaving Winona for St. Patrick in Biloxi to be the girls basketball coach.
Mumme is coming off an outstanding season with both the boys and girls’ teams. The Lady Stars went 35-5 and lost to Rossville Academy in the Class 4A state championship game. The Stars went 30-5 and also lost in the Class 4A title game to Clinton Christian.
“Words cannot describe how special this past season was,” Mumme said. “Obviously winning as many games as both groups did make this season special and there will be some games I will never forget, but that is not what I am going to hold on to. I’m going to hold on to the memories we made on road trips, summer camps, all the team activities we did, all the jokes and laughs that we shared.”
Mumme said there were a lot of memories made this season.
“I’m going to remember the adversity and challenges we faced throughout the year and how we were able to overcome it all,” Mumme said. “I’m going to remember how hard these kids played for one another and how they were the true definition of a team. I’m also going to remember the support and everything that this community has done for me and these kids. This past season has provided me and these kids with memories that will last us a lifetime.”
Mumme spent three years at Winona Christian after being an assistant at his alma matter, Carroll Academy. Mumme said he can’t thank the kids and parents enough.
“These past three years at Winona Christian have been some of the most amazing years of my life,” Mumme said. “Before this year the boys’ and girls’ program had only graduated three seniors in my first two years there. So as a first-time head coach and having a bunch of sophomores, freshman and eighth graders starting on the varsity team, I feel like we grew up together over these three years. We made mistakes together, we learned what worked and what didn’t work, and we learned how to become a team together. I can’t thank Winona Christian enough for taking a chance on a first-time head coach from a rival school and allowing me to grow into the person and coach I am today.”
Mumme said the move gets him closer to his family, who recently moved to Hattiesburg.
“My time at Winona Christian has shown me how important family is,” Mumme said. “And taking the St. Patrick job allows me to be a lot closer to my family. For me to leave Winona Christian a school had to check all the boxes as far as what is important to me. St. Patrick is the one school that checked them all. I can’t thank Winona Christian enough. This place will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Mumme also served as the athletics director at Winona Christian.
