Carroll Academy football coach Bo Milton and four of his Rebels will get to play one more game this year.
Milton was recently selected to be one of the head coaches in the Class 1A-2A-3A All-Star football game while four of his players were also selected.
Selected for the Rebels was Morgan Mims, Reese Fulton, Logan Taylor and Austin Smith. Mims, Fulton and Taylor will be playing for Milton while Smith will be suiting up for the other squad.
“It’s an honor to be selected,” Milton said. “These four guys will represent their team and their school and that’s a big honor. I’m really proud to get to be with them one last time. We had 15 kids out of our district make it. I think that says a lot about our district. Three of the last four (teams) playing were from out district. It’s just a big honor for our kids. I’m looking forward to it.”
Milton will team up with quarterback Morgan Mims one last time. Mims rushed for more than 2,000 yards and was named the Most Valuable Player in District 2-3A. Milton, who will be calling plays, said he plans on using Mims as his quarterback.
“You have to keep it real simple but I like Morgan being back there because he knows what everybody is supposed to do,” Milton said. “It’s going to be really simple. You only have five practices so you can’t do a whole lot. But these are the best players in our league so they should pick it up pretty easy.”
Joining Mims with Milton’s team will be Fulton and Taylor, who are likely to play defense but could see some time on offense.
“Reese will probably play defensive end but we are still debating about that,” Milton said. “We have 36 players so that’s 18 per side. We are going to try to keep them on one side so everybody gets plenty of playing time. But I could see me putting Reese in at tight end if I needed him.”
Milton said Taylor will likely be a safety on defense.
“He had 15 career interceptions and does a really good job at safety,” Milton said. “What we want to do on defense, you have to have a safety back there who can cover some ground. But he could easily come play offense because he knows the system.”
Because the players were selected for teams in a draft, Smith will end up playing opposite of Milton, most likely on the offensive line.
“Coach (Junior) Graham was really high on him,” Milton said of Smith. “He’s a really good offensive lineman and will do a good job. I just know Coach Graham grabbed him up pretty quick. He was really high on him.”
The Class 1A-2A-3A all-star game will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Jackson Prep. The Class 4A-5A-6A game will follow it.
Players report on Tuesday and will have a one-hour practice that day. They will practice twice on Wednesday and twice on Thursday.
