The Lady Jaguars of J.Z. George fast pitch softball team didn't know as of late Tuesday who they would be playing in the first round of the State 3A playoffs this weekend, but they just knew they were in the field.
J.Z. George closed out Region 3-3A play with a thrilling 10-7 win over Ruleville Central on April 11 to finish 5-3 in league play. The Lady Jags, who are 8-9 overall, were scheduled to take on Holmes County Central Thursday on the campus of Holmes Community College in Goodman, weather permitting.
Laney Clunan got the win in the circle against Ruleville as she struck out 11 batters and allowed just two hits. She issued nine walks and hit two batters, which kept Ruleville in the game.
The Lady Tigers scored four runs in the second and three in the seventh. J.Z. George tallied three in the first, six in the third and one in the fourth.
Olivia Carpenter had a banner day at the plate with two singles, a home run and four RBI. Clunan had a single, double and scored a run, and Jasmine Newman had a single, walked three times and scored once.
