Winona senior Carson Holly has signed to run track and cross country at MUW.
“It's a small school. I felt more comfortable there,” he said.
Holly won the 1600 at the 3A state meet last year in a personal best time of 4:43.63. His goal for his senior year is 4:30.
In cross country, Holly was eighth at the state meet as a junior, but was unable to run as a senior due to a broken arm suffered in a pickup basketball game. “That was devastating,” he said.
College cross country is 8,000 meters, just under five miles. That's three kilometers (nearly two miles) more than the high school distance.
“I think it will be a small adjustment,” he said of the longer distance. “I think it will be easy once I make the adjustment.”
To keep in running shape during the winter season, Holly runs at least three miles three times a week, and he played on the Winona soccer team.
He plans to study kinesiology at MUW with a goal of being a physical therapist.
