We are looking for a big sports summer at the Winona Times and The Conservative.
Since being named sports editor in December, veteran sports reporters Laurence Hilliard and Robbie Robertson and myself have worked diligently at providing the readers of our papers with top-level prep sports coverage.
The next two months we plan to continue that trend as we work toward the beginning of a new prep sports year beginning in August.
But until then we are looking for interesting community stories to include in the sports section. If you would like to share your suggestions please e-mail me at sports@winonatimes.com or send a text to 601-938-2471. It may be a feature story about a person of interest, a youth sports team, or an upcoming event. Every suggestion will be considered.
We are also interested in reporting on other local events such as tennis, golf, road-racing, etc.
Just to give you a little info about us, Hilliard formerly wrote sports for the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, while Robbie Robertson has worked at both the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal in Tupelo and the Meridian Star as well as several weeklies.
I got into the sportswriting business at the age of 17 as a high school senior and just completed my 43rd year covering high school sports. I have been in the journalism business full-time since the age of 19.
My newspaper experience includes sports editor of three dailies — The Meridian Star, Natchez Democrat, and Laurel Leader-Call — and several weeklies.
Along with overseeing sports coverage for four other weekly papers besides the Times and Conservative, I am pastor of First Assembly of God in Philadelphia.
