Sheriff Clint Walker would like the public to be aware that there are scam artists who have been targeting our area again recently. To prevent our citizens from being victims, they need to be alert for offers and scenarios that seem to be too good to be true.
Some “contractors” might pull up in your driveway and tell you that they have just finished a job, and have some leftover asphalt, gravel, concrete, paint, landscaping materials, etc. They will offer to pave your driveway, gravel it, paint or whatever the case may be for a very small fee. They will let you know that they are able to offer it to you so cheaply since it was leftover and needs to be used as soon as possible.
Once the homeowner agrees, they will dump the gravel or asphalt and demand hundreds or even thousands of dollars. They may behave in a threatening manner and try to bully the homeowner into paying their demands. Some act as though the homeowner would be in some sort of trouble if he reported it to law enforcement. Oftentimes, the homeowner will pay them out of fear or embarrassment. Many times, these crimes go unreported, because the victim is embarrassed that they were tricked by such cunning criminals. After all, they appeared to be nice and friendly professionals with new and good equipment and seemed to be on the up and up. Please beware of these people and report them to your local Sheriff’s Department. You will not be in any trouble, and it may help someone else to avoid falling prey to their schemes.
Thanks to a concerned citizen, who remembered these warnings in the past, we have a picture of a man that attempted to con her. She reported it to the CCSO, and it turned out that he was wanted on felony charges out of Georgia. He also had a weapon in his vehicle. We appreciate her quick thinking and her reporting it to us.
Help us to help you. If you have been targeted, please call and report it immediately. The number to Carroll County SO is 662-237-9283.
