On Thursday, April 3, Rotarian Al Baker introduced his son Chris Baker as the speaker at the Winona Rotary Club. Chris delivered a presentation about chess, exploring the many strategic elements of the game.
Chris’s journey into chess began when his son Aaron introduced him to the game and taught him the basics. This father-son connection sparked a passion that grew into an appreciation for the challenging mental sport. This led Chris to establish a thriving chess club in Scott County.
A 1989 graduate of Winona High School, Chris earned his bachelor's degree in journalism from Ole Miss. He currently works for the Mississippi Department of Corrections and serves a vice president of the Mississippi Association.
With a vision to expand chess opportunities in his hometown, Chris expressed his desire to establish a chess club in the Winona area. However, he noted that the initiative would require a dedicated local supporter to help manage the club, as he resides in Scott County.
Anyone interested in helping develop a chess program in Winona is encouraged to contact the Rotary Club for more information on how to connect with Chris and turn this vision in to reality.
