It was a rough week for the Carroll Academy baseball team.
The Rebels lost three games to Winston in district play last week, falling 19-3 and
9-1 on Thursday. Winston completed the sweep with a 17-6 win on Saturday.
Carroll will return to action this week against rival Winona Christian. Game 1 is set for Tuesday at Winona while Game 2 is Thursday at Carroll. Game 3 of the series will return to Winona Christian on Friday.
Winston 19, Carroll 3
The Patriots scored 15 runs in the first inning and cruised to a run-rule win in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday.
Winston scored 15 in the first, three in the second and one in the fourth. Carroll scored one in the top of the fourth.
Reed Thomas was 2-for-3 while Austin Mims singled and had an RBI. Hayes White score Carroll’s only run.
Ethan Mims started on the mound and pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up six runs on three hits and a walk while hitting two batters. Thomas pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up 12 runs on nine hits and two walks. Landon Grantham pitched the last three innings and gave up one run on one hit and two walks.
Winston 9, Carroll 1
The Patriots completed the doubleheader sweep with an eight-run win in the nightcap on Thursday.
Winston scored three in the first, five in the fourth and one in the third.
Carroll only had four hits as Reed Thomas doubled and drove in a run. C.J. McDonald, Ethan Mims and Jake Truitt each had singles as well.
Hayes White pitched four innings and gave up eight runs on eight hits and four walks while McDonald pitched the last two innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits and two walks.
Winston 17, Carroll 6
The Patriots pulled away late to take a six-inning, run-rule win on Saturday to complete the series sweep.
Winston scored four in the first and led
5-1 after three. Winston added four in the fourth while Carroll answered with three in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to
9-4. Winston added one in the fifth and seven in the sixth while Carroll added two in the sixth for the final margin.
Each team had 14 hits as Reed Thomas was 3-for-4 while Parker Daves was
2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Austin Mims was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Tyler Brooks and Reid Blaylock were each 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Mims started on the mound and pitched four innings, giving up nine runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out five. Daves pitched the next 1 1/3 innings and gave up eight runs on four hits and four walks while striking out two. Blaylcok got the last two outs for the Rebels.
