What do you do?
To help you remember...
Having lived through Mama’s dementia caused by microvascular brain strokes over what seemed like a long period of time of decline, I have wondered if I will develop the same problems.
I remember cleaning up Mom’s home and finding an article about dementia, its progress, and what to expect as a person with memory loss. The article gave a way to figure out a projected rate of decline and life expectancy. I saw mama’s little pencil figuring as she worked out that she would live to be 92 at the rate she was declining.
She just about pegged it!
Dementia is a disease that robs a person of their past and clouds their future. A doctor of mama’s explained that it can be compared to a light bulb that flickers because it isn’t getting a steady stream of electricity. The mind might function well for a bit, then dim again.
When Gary and I were newlyweds and “adulting” as folks say now; working, paying bills, and being responsible; I became worried.
I went to Gary and told him, “I’m afraid we wont have any memories!”
He needed a little explanation. “I mean, we just do the same thing working and paying bills and what will we have to remember about our lives if we don’t have adventures?”
He planned a getaway weekend to the coast for us right away! And we began to make our family memories! Although, our memories really started the minute we saw each other and were instantly drawn to each other.
I love taking photos! We usually had a pretty good camera and enjoyed taking pictures as we had children and lived our lives together. The boys, at times, complained about stopping to take a quick picture. Now they appreciate seeing the photos and having their memories jogged about what all we did!
The Bible tells us that God wants us to remember what He does! He wants us to remember His teaching. Numbers 15:40 tells the people of Israel to make tassels on the corners of their garments. Each tassel was to have a blue thread in it. The tassels were a reminder to obey God’s commandment and to strive to be holy. We all need to remember His teaching!
Jesus told us to have a meal like He did with his disciples before his crucifixion to pay the penalty for our sins. The Lord’s Supper is to remember how Jesus shed his blood and had his body broken for us in sacrifice. “He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for your. Do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19
