Mrs. Vera Mae Hopper Downs of Carrollton passed away on Tuesday, May 26, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven.
She was born in Duncan, Mississippi, on February 23, 1935, and was 85 years old.
There was a graveside funeral service on Saturday, May 30, at 10 a.m., at Poplar Springs Cemetery near Carrollton. Rev. Duane Jensen officiated the service.
She worked as the cafeteria manager at J. Z. George High School in North Carrollton and was a homemaker. Mrs. Downs was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church near Carrollton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe L. Downs Jr.; son, Johnny Downs; parents, George Washington and Lena Mae Mann Hopper; sisters, Marie Utz and Dorothy Hopkins; and brother, George W. Hopper Jr.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Downs Flemmons (Phillip) of Carollton and Joyce Downs Vickers (Danny) of McCarley; two sons, George Downs (Rina) of Grenada and Jimmy Downs (Myria) of Carrollton; one sister, Carroll Joyce Mitchell of Carrollton; eleven grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
