The Town of North Carrollton has begun the application process for the Mississippi Municipal League High School Scholarship Program.
“The MML scholarship program provides three scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each for high school seniors in Mississippi who plan to attend an accredited community college, college or university in Mississippi,” North Carrollton Mayor Ken Strachan said.
The General Scholarship is open to all high school seniors and is co-sponsored by Mississippi Power Company. There are two Limited Scholarships. One is open to children or grandchildren of employees or elected officials of Mississippi municipalities and to high school seniors working part-time for a member municipality of the Mississippi Municipal League and is sponsored by Phelps Dunbar. A second Limited Scholarship is being offered by the Mississippi Municipal Service Company and is open to children or grandchildren of employees or elected officials of Mississippi municipalities that are members of the MMSC Liability Plan or the Workers Compensation Group.
“I am proud that we are working with MML to have these applications available for seniors here at J.Z. George High School. Applicants may only apply for one scholarship and must submit a 2,000-word essay entitled ‘Why I Should Consider a Career in Municipal Government’,” Mayor Strachan said.
The application deadline is May 24 and the scholarship winners, and their parents will be recognized in June at the Mississippi Municipal League awards ceremony in Biloxi. According to Mayor Strachan, who is a member of the Mississippi Municipal League Board of Directors, the winners essay will be published in Mississippi Municipalities Magazine.
