Norman Oliver Mitchell, 78, of McCarley passed away at his residence on Sunday, May 4, 2025. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, in the Oliver Funeral Home Chapel with visitation from 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. The Rev. Lanny Haley, the Rev. Rupert Ingram, and the Rev. Mike Barrentine officiated the services. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Norman was born on September 16, 1946, in Carroll County to Toll Oliver and Lawis Blakely Mitchell. He was a long-time member of McCarley Baptist Church where he made his profession of faith at an early age. He was raised in Carroll County and graduated high school at J.Z. George High School. He then attended Holmes Community College and Mississippi State University where he earned his teaching degree in Vocational Agriculture. Norman taught in Alabama five years before returning home to Carroll County where he continued to teach at Vaiden High School and J.Z. George High School until he retired with over 30 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Rosser and Geraldene Barrentine; two brothers, Howard Mitchell and Lyndell Mitchell. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Vera Browning Mitchell; daughter, Norma Caine (Ben) of Batesville; son, Timothy Mitchell of Starkville; sister, Donna Browning (John) of Madison; niece, Karla Tate; and nephews, Scott Browning, and Mike Barrentine.
Pallbearers were Wayne McCrary, David O'Bryan, Brian Cheneault, Mark Whitworth, Robert McCrary, and Reese McCrary.
