A Winona teen was indicted by a Montgomery County Grand Jury for first degree murder, and his brother was indicted on accessory after the fact in connection with the July 5, 2018, shooting death of a 16-year-old boy.
The grand jury handed down an indictment for Markevion Merritt, now 17, in connection with the murder of Ty-Quarrius Hardimon, 16. Merritt, who is being charged as adult, appeared before Judge Joseph Loper, Jr., in Montgomery County Circuit Court Tuesday where he was arraigned, and public defender Lee Bailey was appointed defense council.
According to the Winona Police Department, Hardimon was shot and killed Thursday, July 5, 2018, on Silver Street near the intersection of Highway 51. Police responded to the scene at 10:36 p.m. and found the teen shot in the street.
Montgomery County Coroner Allan Pratt declared him dead at the scene, and the body was transported to the Mississippi Crime Lab in Pearl for an autopsy where it was ruled a homicide. The murder investigation was led by Winona Chief of Police Tommy Bibbs and Captain Dan Herod.
Merritt was arrested a few days later. He is currently being held on a $300,000 bond.
According to Bibbs, Michael Merritt was indicted for accessory after the fact in connection with the murder by the grand jury after hearing the evidence in the case against his younger brother, Markevion. The indictment stated that Michael Merritt was charged for “helping conceal evidence.”
