The surgeons are in, prepared for brain surgery, and ready to fix Mr. Sheep and Ms. Lamb up. But, it’s okay, don’t be afraid -- these fifth graders really know their stuff! Let the surgery begin, the surgeons are in!
Fifth graders at Winona Elementary School, with the help of Winona Career and Technical Center Digital Technology, Teacher Academy, Culinary Arts and Health Science students, held a surgery day.
Students dissected a sheep’s brain and learned which parts of the brain control feelings, creativity, and intelligence, as well as which side of the brain controls which side of the body. They learned of the frontal lobe, amygdala, hippocampus and nerve transmitters.
This is the second year Winona Elementary School’s fifth graders “operated” in science class.
“They learn all about the brain, and in other classes, they do activities dealing with the brain,” Deanna Lowery said.
Students also enjoyed a sweet treat as they made “brain cupcakes,” while still learning different parts of the brain.
Lowery said after Winona teachers toured the Ron Clark Academy in Georgia, they began to do room transformations. Lowery said Winona Elementary School counselor Tina Buckley collaborated with Edward Penn, fifth grade science teacher, and the two did the project together.
