Mayor Mel Hawthorne wants to start recreation league sports for young children in Vaiden, and he went before the Carroll County Supervisors to ask how he could get started.
“I want to start t-ball, buddy ball, something down at the walking track in Vaiden,” he said. “I’ve tried to contact Art [Hicks], but I can’t get him on the phone. And I wanted to know what steps I would have to take or if you all have some resources.”
Supervisors told him to try and get in touch with Hicks again to see how he could help. Hawthorne said he’s not looking to make a lot of money, but he wants to be able to get the community involved more.
Also, he asked for the Supervisors support for the upcoming Vaiden Heritage Festival.
“We gave the others $1,000, I think it’s only fair that we do the same for Vaiden,” Supervisor Claude Fluker said and made the motion. It was approve unanimously.
Also, the board:
• Approved Dixie Roofing to do roof repair/replacement at the Vaiden Public Library.
• Approved board notices for work to proceed on County Road 87 in Beat 5, County Road 215 in Beat 2 and in Beat 3. Also approved supplemental agreement and board order for County Road 69 in Beat 2.
•Approved the purchase of a truck and van for the Carroll County Regional Correctional Facility and approved a 90 day employee probation for insurance to kick in for new hires.
• Approved a Code RED Emergency Agreement Renewal and renewed the Countinuty of Operations Plan.
• Approved Ryan Taylor as special prosecutor, contingent upon his acceptance, for Youth Court because of a conflict.
Taylor was recommended by Board Attorney Kevin Horan. Horan said since Taylor has been elected as the new Montgomery County Prosecutor it will give him some practice for his new office.
• Approved to apply for a grant for illegal dump sites.
• Approved travel reimbursement for Mattie Foreman for a refresher course and Deputy Tax Assessor Clerk Tammy Inmon. Tax Assessor Wilton Neal said Inmon will go to a school in mid-October to get her Mississippi Collector of Revenue Certification. The board also approved a pay increase of $2,500 for Inmon.
