Next Tuesday, voters in Montgomery County will head back to the polls to determine the Democratic nominee for the race of Montgomery County Tax Assessor/Collector and Montgomery County Sheriff. The winners of Tuesday’s runoff will advance to November’s General Election.
In the tax assessor’s race, Laurie Middleton Lockett and Teresa Green will face off. The two finished first and second in a four-man race in the August 6 Democratic Primary.
In the primary, Lockett led Green 1,080 votes to 580, however because it was a split race, which also included candidates Sue Stidham and Tilford Robinson, no one received 50 percent plus one of the vote.
The winner of the race will face Republican candidate Brad Johnson and independent candidate Monica Turner. The winner will succeed Tax Assessor Velma Young, who chose not to seek re-election for a fourth term in office.
In the Sheriff’s race, incumbent Sheriff Bubba Nix will face challenger Jeff Tompkins. The two finished first and second in the Democratic primary, with Jamey Mims finishing third. Nix led Tompkins 1,145 votes to 1,067, with just 78 votes separating them.
Absentee voting opened Friday and ends Saturday, August 24.
Those who voted in the Democratic primary and those who didn’t vote in the primary at all are eligible to vote in the runoff. Those cast their ballots in the Republican Primary cannot vote in the Democratic Runoff Election.
