STEWART – The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department made three drug arrests during a driver checkpoint near the Montgomery-Webster County line Saturday night.
According to Sheriff Bubba Nix, around 9 p.m. on July 15, Deputy Jim Burton and Deputy Kelvin Lee were working a driver checkpoint with the Webster County Sheriff’s Department near the county line.
Nix said James Chapman, 40, of Winona came through the checkpoint in a 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck, and was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).
Also arrested in the stop was Kristy Leeann Miller, 37, of Haskell, Okla., who was also charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).
Both Chapman and Miller were taken to the Webster County Jail where they are being held on a $10,000 fine. Monday afternoon, the two made their initial appearances before Montgomery County Justice Court Judge Larry Bamberg. Preliminary hearings are set for July 25 in Montgomery County Justice Court.
Also arrested for drug charges during the driver checkpoint shortly after midnight on July 16 was Billy Laymon Mays, Jr., 37, of West Point. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and transported to Webster County Jail.
Mays appeared before Judge Keith Stokes Roberts Tuesday and waived his right to a preliminary hearing. Roberts continued bond at $10,000 and appointed Lee Bailey, Montgomery County’s public defender, to represent Mays.
