The Carroll County Board of Supervisors began the process of declaring road damage with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Supervisors along with Shane Corerro with Willis Engineering and Emergency Management and Civil Defense Director Ken Strachan held a teleconference with officials from FEMA at a special-called meeting Tuesday morning. The call established what constitutes as an emergency, how they are categorized, and what the next steps supervisors will need to follow are.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, site visits to assess damage will be held virtually. Once damaged is assessed, Strachan and the supervisors will learn the amount FEMA will reimburse them for any damages done in the 2020 flood which happened in February.
Strachan said FEMA is still reimbursing money from the 2019 flooding when the county was awarded $880,000 in damages from the floods.
In other business:
• Eric Sprayberry with MedStat went before the board to ask about purchasing a new generator. Sprayberry said the generator is owned by Carroll County but is housed in Winona. He said it would cost $3,600 to repair the current generator and they didn’t want to put that “type of money into the generator to have to do it all over again because something happened to it the next year. We just want to buy a new one.”
• The board also presented Ashanti S. Rias of Coila the 2020 MAS Scholarship. Rias is the 2020 graduate of J.Z. George High School and plans to further her education at Mississippi Delta Community College.
• Supervisors will have to go through the process again as the board learned Carroll County was also added to the declaration for the 2020 Easter Storm damage. Also, Strachan told the board he received a report on the 23 watersheds in the county. “We had four of them that came back unsafe and all of them are in poor condition,” Strachan informed board members. One of the dams is listed as “breached until further repairs.”
