Carroll County Emergency Management and Civil Defense Director Ken Strachan informed the Carroll County Board of Supervisors on their next steps with FEMA in regards to damage from heavy rains and flooding.
Strachan said that he’s put in a request for public assistance with FEMA and MEMA and Carroll County and the towns of Carrollton, North Carrollton and Vaiden have all met their requirements.
He said he met with FEMA officials in Grenada last Wednesday where they discussed the progress of possible assistance. He told Supervisors FEMA officials want to meet with all five supervisors, the board attorney, Chancery Clerk, and the payroll clerk Rogan Jackson. The meeting will be at 10 a.m. Thursday morning in Vaiden.
“Once we get all that information, it should take 60 days before we see anything,” Strachan said.
He said he believes it will take place in 30 days because of how far ahead of the game Carroll County was with paperwork and documentation.
“They have everything they need from us, they just need some additional information, and they have questions for all five supervisors,” he said.
In other news, Board Attorney Kevin Horan said he was reassured about the towers at the Big Sand Creek Bridge by International Right-of-Way official Greg Thompson. He said citizens in the area have voiced concerns and have even addressed workers while at the bridge about the brick towers.
The towers have sentimental value to those who live in the area near the Big Sand Creek Bridge.
“It’s going to be a lot wider, and they’re going to work around the towers,” he said.
Horan said the specs could change, and if they do, there’s nothing the county can do about it, but he doesn’t think they will.
“I’m going to have [Representative Karl Oliver] and [Senator Lydia Chassaniol] so that all three of us can have eyes on this project,” Horan said. “But, I don’t see anything alarming about the price.”
IROW has proposed to pay $1,950 to the county for .69 acres for a right-of-way to repair the bridge. After the discussion, the board approved the proposal from IROW.

• Approved travel and lodging for Tax Assessor Wilton Neal and traveled for Tammy Inmon for an upcoming conference.
