There will be a runoff election in Duck Hill between Shernell Brown-Everett and Tommy Earl White. City Clerk Lasonja Sizemore said affidavits were still being counted this morning and the official totals had not been given as of yet.
Brown-Everett and White faced off against three others in Duck Hill’s special election after the death of Alderman Leroy Nash. Voters will go back to the polls on Tuesday, Feb. 4, to vote for Brown-Everett or White. She leads White by only two votes.
Sizemore said Brown-Everett received 34 votes, White received 32 votes, Tyrone Harbin was close behind the two with 22 votes, Jacqueline Eskridge received 11 votes and Wynette Robinson received 8.
Sizemore said Duck Hill’s aldermen are voted at-large, meaning no one is over one particular ward or one particular area, all represent the people in the city limits of Duck Hill and the top vote getter is the winner of the election. She said voter turnout was very low with 108 people voting in the election.
Voting will take place at Duck Hill Town Hall.
Also, Mayor Joey Cooley and the Board of Aldermen held a reception for outgoing attorney Ray Baum. Baum, who served as board attorney for Duck Hill as well as the City of Winona and the Town of Weir in Choctaw County, retired in December.
The board chose Adam Kirk to succeed Baum.
