WINONA – At Montgomery County Supervisor District 3 Willie Earl Townsend, Jr., made a motion to change a portion of Spring Hill Road to Youngs Chapel Road, however, the motion died for the lack of a second due to uncertainty of the expense to make the change.
Townsend said he was presented with a petition from the community requesting the name change for the portion of Spring Hill Road from Lodi Road to Minerva Road, and he made a motion to change the name to Youngs Chapel Road.
Board President Keith McGee asked Montgomery County Emergency Operations Manager Allan Pratt how much it would cost the county to change the road name in the 911 system. Pratt said it was very likely all of Spring Hill Road – not just the part where the name will change – will have to be re-numbered, and that will require work from an engineering firm.
Montgomery County Circuit Clerk Lanelle Martin said it would affect her office as well with elections system.
“There will be an expense to the residents as well,” Pratt said. “They will have to change their checks, addresses, and all of that.”
The board asked Martin and Pratt to look into the costs and get back with the board at the next meeting.
In other business:
• Pratt asked the board if there is any available office space the new representative from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, Grant Miller, could use while working in the area. Chancery Clerk Ryan Wood said there will be a space available once the sheriff’s department moves into the former Montgomery County School District office to the west of the Montgomery County Courthouse.
Wood said the sheriff’s offices on the west side of the courthouse will be used by the Circuit Clerk’s office and the Montgomery County Election Commission for meeting and storage of voting machines.
Sheriff Bubba Nix said his current office on the east side of the courthouse will remain part of the sheriff’s department to house a portion of the courthouse’s surveillance system and give deputies a holding office during court sessions.
Nix said because the Veteran’s Affairs office is only used part-time, that would be a good office for the MEMA representative.
• Pratt asked the board if he could work with County Engineer Christian Gardner to install boundary signs around the county to show where the municipalities end and the county maintenance begins.
• The board voted to purchase a sign maker for street signs throughout the county for $4,299.
