Qualifying for the 2019 general election ends tomorrow at 5 p.m., and according to Montgomery County Circuit Clerk Lanelle Martin, she expects more to qualify before the deadline based on those who have picked up qualifying paperwork in her office.
Martin urged those qualifying as an independent not to wait until the last minute on Friday to qualify because signatures collected on qualifying paperwork must be certified prior to qualifying. That takes the circuit clerk’s office time.
This week the field of candidates continued to grow as another joins the race for the tax assessor/collector seat and others qualify for various county seats.
In the Montgomery County Tax Assessor/Collector race, Laurie Middleton Lockett qualified to run on the Democratic ticket. She will face Teresa Green in the Democratic primary, and the winner of that contest will face Monica S. Turner and Sue Stidham, both running as independents, in November’s general election.
With the retirement of longtime county prosecutor Lane Greenlee, Jena J. Hoover is so far the sole qualifying for the position, and she is running on the Democratic ticket.
In the Supervisor races, Ronald White, who qualified as a Democrat, will challenge incumbent Janet Roby-Harper for the District 5 seat of the Board of Supervisors.
In the District 2 seat for the Board of Supervisors, incumbent Edwin Taylor is being challenged by Norman Small. Both have qualified on the Democratic ticket.
Incumbent Willie Earl Townsend, Jr., is being challenged by Katrina Craft-Bays for the District 3 seat of the Board of Supervisors. Both are running as Democrats.
Incumbent Supervisors Keith McGee (District 1) and Ron Wood (District 4) have all qualified to run on the Democratic ticket with no opposition so far.
In the District 1 Justice Court Judge race, Edd Lee Collins, Jr. has qualified as an independent candidate. He is challenging incumbent Keith Stokes Roberts, who is running as a Democrat. In the District 2 Justice Court Judge race, Larry Bamberg has qualified to seek re-election as an independent. There are no other qualifiers for that race.
Bryan Lott, who is running as an independent, is challenging incumbent Jerry Dale Bridges, who is running as a Democrat, for the District 2 Constable seat. In the District 1 Constable race, incumbent L.C. Smith has qualified to run as a Democrat.
In the Montgomery County Sheriff’s race, incumbent Bubba Nix, who is running for re-election on the Democratic ticket, will face Jamey Mims and Jeff Tompkins in the Democratic Primary in August. The winner of that election will face Barry Gregg, who is running as an independent, in November’s General Election.
Currently unopposed in their bids to seek re-election are Chancery Clerk Ryan Wood, Circuit Clerk Lanelle Martin, and Coroner Allen Pratt.
