Male inmates in Montgomery County may be headed back to the Carroll-Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility upon approval from the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors.
Montgomery County has been taking their male inmates to the Grenada County Jail after an interlocal agreement expired between the two counties in 2019. A new agreement could not be agreed upon by the two counties, so Montgomery County began taking inmates to Webster County and then Grenada County to house.
However, with a newly-elected sheriff taking office in Montgomery County, a new interlocal agreement is currently being negotiated.
Currently, male inmates arrested by the City of Winona are held at the Carroll-Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility. If the inmate is bound over to the action of the grand jury, the inmates become the responsibility of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department. When that happens, the inmates are transported to Grenada. Women are transported to Greenwood.
Carroll County Board Attorney Kevin Horan said after looking it over, he doesn’t see a reason why the county shouldn’t approve of the inmate housing agreement with Montgomery County, pending a few changes.
“I spoke with Devo [Montgomery County Board Attorney Alan D. Lancaster], and he said the new board would [vote to] approve it when they meet in January,” Horan said.
The board approved the inmate agreement pending approval by the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors.
“Well, sheriff, how you feel about this fella?” Board President Rickie Corley asked about Montgomery County incoming sheriff Jeff Tompkins.
“I’m excited,” Sheriff Clint Walker said. “I think he’s going to be good.”
