The Winona Garden Club got off to a great start on October 10 with 29 members and two guests present for the meeting presided over by President Debbie Enis.
Delicious refreshments were offered from a beautiful fall table by hostesses Carolyn Dismukes, Priss Ferguson, Dianne McCormick, Pam Robertson, Susan Robertson and Tisha Vaughan.
The program featured guest speaker Mahaley Hames of Oakland. Mahaley has served two terms as president of Charleston’s Magnolia Garden Club and as Chairman of the Birds and Butterflies Committee for The Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc. She received her master’s degree at Delta State University, taught in the Grenada School System, and worked for 20 years with the Corp of Engineers. Her passion for safeguarding and enjoying our birds and butterflies was made apparent as she spoke of her experiences in preparing and enjoying areas in and around her home so that birds have access to food, water and shelter. Members were invited to prepare and maintain such a habitat at our abode.
Following the program, an induction ceremony for three new members was led by Co-Vice President Shelley Hunger. They are Donna Hoffman, Susan Perkins and Diane Tompkins, and the members welcome them into the club. Officer reports and committee reports were given and donations were collected for the Irma and Harvey Fund to assist hurricane victims in repairing and replacing gardens.
Plans were discussed for the Club’s Christmas trip to Memphis Botanical Gardens, and a work morning was scheduled for Friday for grounds maintenance at Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital.
Meeting was adjourned and members dismissed.
