With the purchase of a new fire truck, two new police vehicles, the beginning of construction of a new well, and work to help the flooding problems, the Town of Duck Hill has a lot going on.
Mayor Joey Cooley said the town recently purchased a fire truck, and the hope now is that the purchase will help in lowering Duck Hill’s fire rating or keeping it the same.
“It’s not a new one, but it’s one that will serve us for the next 10 to 15 years,” Cooley said.
He said the two also just purchased two additional police vehicles.
“We’re a small town, and in our town our size we can’t purchase anything new without passing some cost on to citizens,” He said.
Cooley said to keep taxes low for residents of Duck Hill, the town looked into different avenues to purchase vehicles.
“We purchased one police vehicle from the county and another from a private dealer in North Mississippi,” he said.
Along with a new fire truck and two new police vehicles, he said the town is also in the middle of constructing a new well for its water system.
“We are replacing a well and constructing a new one. Right now, we’re about to enter into the bid process.”
He said the well is slated to be completed within the next six months, which means the water quality in Duck Hill will improve.
On top of that, Cooley said the North Montgomery County United for Prosperity (NMCUP), ACER, and ASEEDS are working on the flooding problems following heavy rain. Before, when it rained in Duck Hill, water would sit in the middle of downtown for days until it receded.
But, with the help of ASEEDS, the town is now in the second phase of a project that will redirect the water to Bogue Creek.
“That should be starting in the next few weeks,” Cooley said.
He also said the town has a serious problem with stray dogs and recently hired Michael Moore as a part-time animal control officer to try and curb the problem.
Also, Cooley said in May, for the entire month, there will be a neighborhood clean-up month. He said the town planned to rent a dumpster so people can do a little spring cleaning and help with the appearance of Duck Hill overall.
But, he’s asking for people to allow the dumpster to be emptied before adding more trash.
“Last year, we had people just throw things besides the dumpster when it was full, and we don’t want that this year,” he said.
