The Winona-Montgomery Consolidated School District accepted a bid of $40,000 for the purchase of the former Montgomery County Elementary School building on School Road in Kilmichael. The building was purchased by God’s House of Hope of Nettleton.
According to its Facebook page, God’s House of Hope is a “a 6-8 month Christian Discipleship Training program for people with drug, alcohol, or emotional issues. God's House of Hope is the first in-house residential program for both women and men. The program's purpose is to provide hope to the hopeless. It is our goal to direct the people to the Lord Jesus to find love and a purpose for their lives and to make disciples of them as the Bible directs.”
Dr. Teresa Jackson, superintendent of education for the Winona-Montgomery Consolidated School District, the school board decided to declare the building surplus and advertise for bids because of interest showed by God’s House of Hope.
“We don’t need to maintain those buildings -- the electricity, gas, water, insurance,” Jackson said. “We felt like to be good stewards of what we have, it was a good idea to declare that building as surplus and get bids.”
Jackson said it costs the district $35,000 annually to keep the former Montgomery County Elementary School and Montgomery County High School maintained.
Jackson said no one has approached the district about the purchase of the high school building, but the board would entertain inquiries about selling the building.
