WINONA – An attraction of a different sort has come to Winona in the form of outdoor family fun.
Old Mountain Outdoor Adventures (OMOA) is a treetop aerial obstacle course and zip line adventure park located on Old Mountain Road in Winona that opened on July 10, according to owners Russell and Candace Durham.
They are scheduled to have a grand opening at the park on Aug. 5.
The adventure park has already welcomed visitors from Mississippi State University, families from Greenwood, and as far south as Bogue Chitto.
OMOA also operates under the brand Treetop Quest and offers several adventures to people ages 2-80, including Treetop Quest, Spider Quest, Kids Quest and Kiddie Quest, according to Russell Durham.
Treetop Quest is an aerial obstacle and zip line course with two self-guided courses featuring 24 tree-to-tree obstacles of zip lines, rope bridges and moving logs for people ages 7 and older. Participants are to attend pre-quest training and wear a harness throughout this activity, according to an OMOA brochure.
Spider Quest is a self-guided, harness-free treetop net obstacle course of 15 tree-to-tree obstacles suspended over a more than 8,000-square-foot safety net. This quest is the only treetop aerial net course in Mississippi, and the only other course of this nature is located in Atlanta, Ga., according to an OMOA brochure.
Kids Quest is two obstacle courses for harnessed participants ages 4-6, and Kiddie Quest is available for 2 and 3 year olds to swing, dig or climb, according to an OMOA brochure.
The level of physical activity makes wearing closed-toe shoes a strict requirement.
“OMOA required a waiver for anyone entering the park grounds, including those choosing not to engage in our adventure activities. For anyone under 18, this waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian,” as stated in the brochure.
Russell Durham said he and his wife started the business simply to spend more time as a family with their children, Noah, 12, Bella, 10, and Saxon, 6, and these days, they get to play at Old Mountain Outdoor Adventures whenever they want.
However, they hope the adventure also will be helpful and educational for visitors.
“We want to be able to host a very memorable experience in the outdoors,” said Russell Durham.
Treasure Quest is a map-guided activity with informative signs throughout the park, bearing information on plant life and attractions in the park, according to the Durhams.
The information, provided by Arborists, is adaptable to state testing for schools, 4-H volunteers, Boy Scouts, and other groups, Russell Durham said.
They also hope to host more mission groups and sunrise services.
OMOA is an environmentally friendly activity park built according to specifications provided by the Treetop Quest developer from France, Russell Durham said.
